Electric Power Conversion PDF Print E-mail
Written by Gary Breisch

I recommend that everyone interested in and wanting to promote Electric Power Conversion (EPC) for vehicle power using plug-in resources, Solar, Wind, and Water resources, please setup Google Alerts for various related subjects. I have one for "electric car conversions" and “$1/watt Solar” for example so that I can get a constant flow of updated information on those subjects and more.

I have been encouraging local “personalities” and business owners of vehicle repair centers to study and keep up with all that is going on and all that is coming in the subject. I want to be considered one of the experts on this revival wave of human ingenuity and innovation locally and network with more people who want to convert their car into electric plug-in and hybrid car mobility.

I would like to have some internet and email local networking to make this town the electric vehicle capitol of OK and have contacted the sharpest in town that can make it happen. I contacted Randy Calley with “Same Day Auto Repair” and Nathan Hostetler with “Accurate Autobody & Glass” to try to promote their activity in the electric car conversions. I do not know if Benny Osborn, “The Wizard”, a local mechanical genius, is accessible via email, but he would be a good one to network if he is still alive and kicking. I do not think he has much computer or email savvy but it would be nice to have him as part of the network.

One of my many dreams is to have a four wheel drive van that is such a vehicle so I can plug-in and charge for at least 200 miles and have an onboard generator and solar cells on top and sides of the vehicle with advertising support lettering and graphics to promote and have the vehicle sponsored by you guys and anyone interested in this subject. Please visit my website for this and other project updates.

I want to encourage Nathan to bring that subject more up on the KRMG talk show and to help get the rhetoric going on this subject.

Another subject of interest is a system to compress the natural gas from a house line for use in a natural gas powered hybrid engine setup for the backup generator for such an electric car conversion. I want to encourage you to take old vehicles that you can obtain for little or nothing and convert them to electric for show and sale as you learn and become the local experts in this area.

I am particularly excited about the advancements made by Tesla. While others talk about doing something, Tesla has been doing it and puts the big auto designers/builders to shame in the field of electric vehicles. Others show promise but we need to see them driving our streets with their vehicles now and from now on. I have read and reviewed many websites for the subject and for promised innovations and Tesla is the best in innovation available. There is one thing lacking on the market now, an inexpensive version of their vehicle that the general consumer can afford for $20-$30K that they can buy now, not just a reservation or a concept car. If you know of one locally being sold, driven, and available, let me know, I have a list of interested people, ready to buy.

I am still promoting my “Powerhouse” ™ design. It is a house that produces more power than it uses. It will incorporate wind, solar, and water resources to power it. There is no reason why a compressor cannot be used to compress natural gas from a house line to be used in a backup generator for hybrid vehicles, backup for power or gas line outage for a house, and maybe to power a house cheaper than grid tie power. I am still looking for a compressor setup for that system design.

If you are interested in joining and contributing money, time, or whatever to the Electric Power Conversion Team (EPCT), and networking using the internet and email, please contact me, Gary Breisch, the originator and sole proprietor of the EPCT to promote these innovative concepts and action to make them a reality.

My step daughter, Glashay, who works at a car dealership as one of the top salespeople while going to college tells me that the oil business is doing great with the high prices for fuel. Several oilmen have dropped into the dealership with cash to buy five vehicles at a time and more. So Oklahoma has an opportunity to use their resources to invest in the future of electric power conversion related projects. The economy is much better than some people say for Oklahoma and we have an opportunity to use our good fortune to develop our natural resources to benefit the whole world.

Good old T. Boone Pickens, who has helped my University, Oklahoma State University (OSU), is also considered a substantial team member to promote common goals for our country and state. I highly recommend that you visit his sites and blogs to spread the good news of progress to better utilize out natural resources with the present and future technological advancements.

See some examples of installations:

One site said Solar cells just got a boost in efficiency thanks to a couple of scientists at the University of Delaware. The news cells can convert 42.8% of the light that strikes them into electricity, which is a step up from the previous record of 40.7%. No info on how to buy or get them however.

The cells do this by splitting light into high energy, low energy, and medium energy chunks. The light is then directed to different materials depending on what type it is, seeking electrons out of it. DARPA is pushing for a goal of 50% efficiency, which would go a long way towards making solar power a more practical alternative energy source.

I am ready for the $1-$2/watt solar cells on my roof now or a sponsor to provide low cost Solar Voltaic (SV) Cells for this and other Demonstration applications for local promotions. The 2007 Oklahoma record ice storm promoted the removal of the upper part of a treehouse deck system on my house. I had already removed much of it to prepare for the installation.

Lloyd Ziegler is one on the unofficial team members with experience in SV installations for remote or mobile applications such as sail boats. When the cost of the cells get more practical and the payback gets down to about 5 years or less, then Lloyd says we will be in a good position to help ourselves and others locally in the planning, design, and installation of this resource on local home and business rooftops and as stand alone buildings or “powerhouses.”

We searched the internet for low priced grid tie systems when I was paying about 6 cents per kwh for my house/office power off the local Electric grid by AEP PSO. At that time, payback was about 54 years at 5.5 hours per day average solar collection for this area and $5/watt cells. August of 2008 they are charging about 10 cents per kwh so things are changing quick and I predict that it will be 12 cents per kwh by August of 2009 that cuts down the payback at $5/watt cells to half of to 28 years payback. If we can get the cost per watt down to the $1-$2/watt, then we will all have a good reason, even without government incentives and tax breaks to do Solar and the market is going to go extreme and supply and demand is going to change substantially for this resource option.

I recommend seeing the movie “who killed the electric car” for the good news at the end of the movie with the development of higher efficiency batteries and solar cells. The movie is getting old and I hope to see more movies or “reality series” that will bring us up to date on progress for the plug-in and hybrid vehicles. Tesla is the only vehicle that I know of that has 220 mile range, zero to 60 9in 3.9 seconds, is being purchased, driven, being built (not much automation yet), and available at a $109K price tag (July 2008 if memory serves me right). Tesla is doing it while others just talk about it. GM keeps telling us that they will have something by 2010 with a 40 mile plug-in range to compare it to their past disappointments of the EV-1 tease and recall since they would not sale the car to the public, they just limited leased them.

The pro-electric generation is taking old cars and converting them to electric. That is one way it is happening. There many working on the design electric cars similar to the GM EV1 that you can read about and see the more about via the internet. Tesla is the only one be selling them and moving ahead instead of just talking and teasing about it. There is less resistance from the oil companies and other forces that are discovering progress in this area will help them and all of us prosper and benefit.

In light of last years Oklahoma ice storm of record induced power outage, it would be nice to not only plug in the car to the house to charge it but to plug the house to a vehicle that could provide emergency power to the house from the small efficient backup engine in the vehicle.

Years ago I dreamed of a car described at www.myxpcar.com and now I see that the word is out that this idea is becoming a reality. I have told several people why I thought a "bumper car" was a good application to the road for safety and function. The "inflatable car" and "inflatable airship/spaceship/airplane" will someday be a reality and we will hear many say; "why did I not think of this simple, practical, application of technology."

Since Tesla seems to be the only one to really get with it, I am not holding my breath on any other companies getting out a reasonably priced car like the XP (inflatable technology) type car by 2010 but I keep on dreaming and looking forward to it.
